Parenthood Post by. Ry Hormel

I really enjoyed the parenthood presentations.  It was nice to both make a presentation and watch them.  The assignment allowed exploring a different perspective on the world of media and advertisements.  I was amazed by what I discovered, the images that were found goes to show the power of the media and how it reinforces stereotypes that are caused through them.
The images of motherhood and fatherhood were very similar throughout all of the presentations.  The images of alternative parenting were much more exciting to view because they offered a different perspective of the issue at hand.  TO find images of motherhood and fatherhood that went against the norms of society, I had to search for them and put in time finding one that I felt expressed a difference in parenting.  This was one of the most interesting parts of the assignment. The difficulty of finding alternative images just goes to show the power of the media and how it reinforces the norms that society creates.
I found Molly’s presentation to be very interesting.  She gave a different perspective on the view of parenthood and brought up the issue of transgender parents.  It is an issue that seems to be completely ignored.  It is troubling to think that people are going through something like this without a proper support system to help them achieve what society views as wrong.  Who are we to say who can be a parent and who is the mommy or daddy?
