Dream World 3- Tina Seretta

The film Dream Worlds 3 highlights the horrible representation of women in today’s pop culture music videos. We objectify women by striping them of their humanity; their bodies become fragmented objects of sexual desire. As a society we have allowed this to become normalized in mainstream media entertainment. The film discusses and elaborates on many of these complex social issues, and further expresses how our culture teaches us what it means to be either a man or a woman. Through music videos women are taught that their only values are their bodies and their sexuality.  Men are taught to be hyper masculine, powerful and violent. They are also taught that women want to be looked at, used, and seen as sexual objects. The main issue with all of these images besides the fact that they are inappropriate and demeaning is the idea that these images are the only ones we see. As the narrator in the film explains we see no diversity among these images, they are all the same. There are always several half-naked women seen dancing, showering exotically in water, and basking in money. None of these images suggest anything besides sex and male dominance. The music video industry is growing and becoming more popular; these images are becoming a reality as public sexual male violence towards women has been seen in recent events. Although the focus of this film was to show the detrimental misinterpretations of women, the film also shows the harsh depictions of men and manhood. Men are all seen as dominant, violent, and sexual aggressors. The film Dream Worlds 3 clearly describes how music videos perpetuate and exaggerate stereotypical gender roles, thus adding to the long list of media that tells us how to act and behave according to our gender.
