Dreamworld 3 - John Gallagher Response

Dreamworld 3 was a very insightful and interesting movie that described the music video culture and examined the male dominance over women portrayed in them.  The film compared the “dream world” to the “real world.” In the documentary, the narrator described women as givers and subjects in pop culture music videos in the United States.  Originating in the hip hop industry, the concept of blatant sexual exposure of women spread to pop music, country music, and rock music.  It is appealing, and sells.  The documentary also described women and their roles in videos.  When alone and without males in the videos, the women are sad, and depressed. This shows their dependence on males and what they can ‘provide’ women with. (money, ownership, dominance) When women aren’t in the partying scene, they are seen tending to men’s needs such as cleaning cars, or airplanes.  Following their work displayed in videos, they relax by sitting in or around pools in bikinis, and exposing their bodies in a wet atmosphere.

The video broke down particular camera angles of women and the significance of each shot.  It also caught my attention in the sense of how gay women are applauded, and gay men in videos is completely absent and does not exist.  The film also transitioned into female artists and what they have to do in order to keep up with the pop culture.  It used the example of Jewel, who was a natural singer and performer who found herself having to expose her body more so in order to be more appealing to her audiences.  In this “dream world” women are not expected to say no, and are depicted as passionate.  It is unfortunate that these qualities carry over into reality and make some men believe that their duty is to have a command and dominance over all females.
