"Dreamworld 3" response by Melissa Monsalve

Dreamworld 3 is the epitome of how gender roles in society are constructed and what they culminate into. Women are reduced to objects for mens pleasure and this in turn reinforces the power man have as the dominate gender in society. What's more, is that all of these views are taken from the point of view of a heterosexual male, so peoples gender identities are based in that foundation.
Women are treated as sexual objects of which men can choose, use, and dispose of at their discretion. My problem is not so much that that's what goes on in "dreamworld" even though that doesn't validate that behavior. What irks me is that young women are taught that it's OK for men to treat the like things to play with however they'd like to and that they should search to be desired in such a way. What's worse is that young boys are taught that treating women like "empty shapes" they can fill with their sexual desires/fantasies. This brings me to what irked me most about the film, which were the scenes from Central Park and Seattle. It's scary how similar those images were to that music video shown in comparison. It is not OK to run around, touching women inappropriately because it is a violation of personal space and respect. It is not a consensual act. Also, the women being shown to be sexual assaulted or harassed did not seem to fight back. However, I'd imagine that if they had, they would have met with an even great force of power from the men to gain dominance. In comes sexual violence, which is also validated in music videos.
It's hard to say that this behavior will change because as long as sex sells thats all that will be sold because the ultimate goal for these producers and directors is money, and the ultimate goal for these artist is not only profit but also attention and adoration from fans, so they need to keep up the image. Since it's the media that pretty much dictates how we as people identify ourselves as men or women or whichever gender we choose, it doesn't seem to me that this behavior will change any time soon
