Keith Veronesi's response to Dreamworlds 3

The documentary film “Dreamworlds 3” is a perfect example of the impact the media has on the social construction of our society. In this documentary there is tons of exposure of females and their bodies that is degrading to their social status in society today. As the documentary takes a deeper look into the media and specifically in music videos, artist Kid Rock says music videos are “all about the girs.” Essentially what he is saying is that these women are put in these videos to attract the male audience and the physical appearance is the only reason for being in the video. However, the problem stretches much further than just a misrepresentation of women in these videos.
As these women are continuously being made as more of a prop than anything else, the power that they give men is ultimately the biggest problem. Our society has been conformed in ways that males will always have the power over females. In these music videos the relationship between these males and females is not just a man and a women, but more a master and a servant. An example was a behind the scene look at male artists throwing deli meats at the backside of women, usually who are naked or partially naked. Is this a sexual desire or fantasy? Or is this sadly a “right” that these men believe they have and that they can do what they please with these women. In the videos we see these women dancing all over the lead singer, often sharing him with multiple girls. This is another example of how the power in the world is not shared evenly. These artists act as if this is what women are supposed to do for them and it makes them feel as if they have the ability to have any women bow to his needs whenever he would like.
Another example of this sense of inferiority amongst males and females is the use of money as a prop. Often in the videos the men are seen sprinkling dollar bills over partially naked women. Is this a sign that men can simply buy women to perform these kinds of acts? These women have become objects of desire for men and unfortunately for the women seen in these videos they begin to believe it. It almost seems as a goal for the women in the videos to be the one dancing on the lead singer and being taken under control by them. The bottom line is this women are simply falling into the social constructionism that has evolved in our world today. They are succombing to the idea that they are inferior to men, and show this by being taken advantage of in these videos. But the question arises, who is more at blame?
In response to my own question, I understand that these horrible acts that were shown where women were being molested or assaulted is entirely the man’s fault, but when it comes to the videos are women completely innocent. Yes, I am sure these women are getting paid money to be in these videos, but at the same time is it worth the price they pay? With every video that is produced, how far are women being set back in terms of socially being equal to men? And is it possible for this problem to ever be fixed?
